Center for Contemporary Drawing
Established by an art historian and two art collectors, the gallery space delves into the realm of drawing. The approach to the conversion was both daring and considerate, aiming to craft expansive areas with significant impact on the street frontage. The layout comprises exhibition spaces, a project area, an artist's studio, and an archive, perceived collectively as a series of displays oriented towards the city. Internally, substantial wooden panels act as a sieve, dividing public and private realms – encompassing living quarters, archives, and offices. This project thus deals with the intricate interplay of urban, public, and private spheres.
The substantial windows are pivotal to the intervention, drawing attention with their proportions along Brunnenstrasse. They seamlessly integrate into the façade, and the visible expanse of sky within the gallery spaces is unparalleled. The polished concrete floor highlights the local aggregate from Berlin. All wooden features are crafted from maple and finished with a white-pigmented oil. Linear fluorescent tubes provide uniform illumination for exhibitions, while selectively directed lighting in private areas fosters a more intimate ambiance.
